To Scan or Not to Scan – Celebrating International Women’s Day with Dr. Evelyn Ho

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Uno Advisers recently hosted an insightful and practical session focused on a topic often overlooked in financial planning: the intersection of medical health and long-term financial security.
We were honoured to welcome Dr. Evelyn Ho, a renowned consultant clinical radiologist, who shared her expertise on navigating the complex world of medical scans and the importance of proactive breast health.

The first part of the session delved into the modern trend of hospital marketing promotions, where we are constantly bombarded with advertisements of “comprehensive” medical checkups and aggressive screening packages.
Dr. Evelyn highlighted a crucial perspective that is often ignored: more testing isn’t always better. She explained that undergoing unnecessary tests can lead to “incidentalomas”, findings that may be harmless but trigger a chain of further high-cost, invasive tests, which can lead to significant emotional stress.
Another vital highlight that Dr. Evelyn brought up was from a financial planning standpoint: these unnecessary tests can directly impact a person’s insurability. Frequent medical screenings will need to be disclosed to insurance companies, which can also affect your chances of getting medical insurance. Moreover, some medical insurance plans also may not cover medical screenings, which means that you will be spending your hard-earned money unnecessarily.

At Uno Advisers, we believe your money should always be well spent. This applies not just to investments and savings, but also to how we manage our healthcare.
Spending money on unnecessary medical screenings isn’t just a waste of resources; it can complicate your financial safety net. By being informed and intentional about our health choices, we protect both our bodies and our bank accounts.
We would like to thank Dr. Evelyn Ho for her invaluable insights and all the attendees who joined us for this meaningful International Women’s Day session. Here’s to making informed choices for a healthier, more secure future!

The second half of the event transitioned into a practical, interactive workshop on Breast Self-Examination. Dr. Evelyn debunked the myth that this is only a concern for women. She reminded the audience that men can get breast cancer too, making this knowledge vital for everyone.
Participants learned how to conduct easy-to-follow Breast Self-Examination techniques at home. The workshop emphasised that every individual’s body is different, and the goal of BSE is to understand your own “normal” so that any changes can be detected early. This hands-on approach empowered our guests with the confidence to take charge of their physical health through simple, regular monitoring.
