Financial Toxicity: The Side Effect No One Prescribes

Uno Advisers was honoured to be part of “Financial Toxicity: The Side Effect No One Prescribes”, a sharing session organised in collaboration with the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM) and IJN University College.
Our co-founder and licensed financial planner, Yuvarajan Periyan, had the privilege of speaking to a room filled with future healthcare professionals about a side effect of illness that is often overlooked: financial toxicity.

While Malaysia provides access to a broad range of healthcare services, patients may still encounter considerable out-of-pocket expenses. The financial burden can also extend beyond treatment costs to include loss of income, ongoing household commitments and the emotional strain caused by financial uncertainty.
During the session, Yuvarajan explored the reality of financial toxicity in Malaysia and discussed how individuals can better manage the financial impact of a health condition. He also highlighted why early financial planning is no longer optional, particularly when an unexpected illness can affect both a patient’s health and financial stability.
For future healthcare professionals, patient care extends beyond clinical treatment. Greater awareness of financial toxicity can help them begin important conversations earlier and guide patients towards suitable support or financial preparedness.

At Uno Advisers, we believe financial planning is not only about building wealth. It is also about developing a healthier relationship with money and being better prepared for the uncertainties that may arise throughout life.
We would like to thank FPAM and IJN University College for the opportunity to share these insights with such an engaged audience. We hope the session encouraged future healthcare professionals to consider the financial realities that patients may experience alongside their medical conditions.
