Understanding Your Taxes: A Beginner-Friendly Workshop with Teman Girls

Uno Advisers recently collaborated with Teman Girls, a community centred on building meaningful friendships among women, for a beginner-friendly workshop on understanding and filing personal income tax in Malaysia.

Led by our co-founder and licensed financial planner, Kimberly Law, the session was designed for first-time taxpayers who wanted to understand how taxation works, particularly for individuals earning employment income.

Rather than overwhelming participants with technical terms, Kimberly broke down the tax-filing process into practical and easy-to-follow explanations. Participants learned how taxable income is calculated as well as the difference between tax reliefs and tax rebates.

One of the key lessons from the workshop was that taxpayers should not pursue every available tax relief simply for the sake of reducing their taxable income. Spending unnecessarily to claim a relief can reduce a person’s overall spending power and may not necessarily result in meaningful savings.

The session encouraged participants to consider whether a purchase is genuinely necessary and aligned with their financial priorities before making it solely for tax purposes. Effective tax planning should support a person’s broader financial position rather than encourage additional spending.

Through this collaboration with Teman Girls, Uno Advisers was pleased to help more women approach their taxes with greater clarity and confidence. By making financial topics more relatable, we hope to empower women to make informed decisions that support both their present needs and future goals.
