Why Smart People Still Fall: Understanding the Psychology Behind Financial Scams

Uno Advisers was honoured to participate in a financial awareness session at MILA University, organised in collaboration with the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia.

During “The Psychology of Scams: Why Smart People Still Fall”, our co-founder and licensed financial planner, Yuvarajan Periyan, explored how modern scams manipulate human emotions and decision-making.

Scams Do Not Only Target the Uninformed

A common misconception is that only careless or financially inexperienced individuals fall for scams. In reality, sophisticated scams are designed to exploit psychological triggers that can affect almost anyone.

During the session, Yuvarajan discussed how scammers may use urgency, fear and trust to influence their targets. These tactics can create pressure that causes an individual to react quickly without taking the time to verify the information presented.

Young adults may be particularly exposed as financial conversations increasingly take place through social media, messaging platforms and digital investment communities.

Awareness Supports Wealth Protection

Financial literacy is not only about learning how to save or invest. It also involves knowing how to recognise suspicious behaviour and protect the wealth that has already been built.

Participants were encouraged to pause before making a financial decision, verify the person or organisation involved and remain cautious when an opportunity depends on pressure or unrealistic promises. Uno Advisers’ guide to financial adviser red flags in Malaysia provides further guidance on warning signs to consider before trusting someone with your money.

At Uno Advisers, we remain committed to promoting financial awareness in both wealth creation and wealth protection. We would like to thank MILA University and FPAM for the opportunity to engage with the students through this timely conversation.
